The portrait paintings in my series, Pressure Points, question the influence of cultural pressures on the construction of identity.
Through a process I created, I use numerical statistics from issues dealing with gender, class, and race as the coordinates for points on a gridded panel or canvas. I then transform pictures of individuals, forcing them to conform to the statistical points on the grid. In this way, the distorted potraits express the ways in which individuals are simultaneously created by and percieved through sets of cultural norms.
Uses statistics regarding sexual objectification.
